Waiting Period for Social Security Disability and Medicare

Most claimants that have gone through the Social Security Disability procedure realize that it is a very lengthy process. In Arizona, it can take at least two years from date of application until a claimant obtains a hearing. Typically, the disabled person will then have to wait even longer after the hearing to get a decision from the judge.

Once a Social Security Disability claimant is awarded benefits, there is a five month waiting period before those benefits even begin. This means that if the claimant is awarded a full year of benefits from the hearing date back to the application date, they're only going to get seven months of benefits.

It's also important to know that the waiting period may not begin more than 17 months prior to the date of the filing. Furthermore cash benefits may not be paid more than 12 months prior to the date of the claim. As you can imagine, this is very difficult to comprehend.

There is also a waiting period for Medicare. Individuals who obtain Social Security disability benefits are eligible for Medicare 24 months from the date of onset. Thus, there is a two-year waiting period for Medicare.
