Details On The Types Of Paralysis

Paralysis is a devastating injury that can result from a workplace accident. This type of injury involves losing muscle function in one of your muscle groups. This means that a person suffering from paralysis may lose feeling or mobility completely in that region of their body. This generally happens when nerves are severely damaged in one area. The type of paralysis often depends on how much of the body and which parts of the body are damaged. Some of the different types include:

  • Paraplegia- this type of paralysis involves damage to both halves of a person's lower body. Generally, if a person suffers from paralysis of their legs, this is called paraplegia. The chest and abdomen areas may also be affected.
  • Quadriplegia/ Tetraplegia- this type of paralysis involves damage to an individual's arms, legs, chest and abdominal area. The key determinant to be considered quadriplegia is paralysis of all four limbs.
  • Cerebral Palsy- this is the term often used when referring to birth injuries of the brain that will affect an individual's motor abilities. Brain injuries that result in movement problems will fall under this category, but it does not necessarily need to occur at birth.
  • Bell's Palsy- this term describes a disease that can affect the facial muscles of an individual.
  • Cauda Equina Syndrome- this involves damage to a mass of nerves that fan out of the spinal cord. These nerves are located between the first and second Lumbar regions on the spine and damage to these can result in loss of movement. This may lead to the results of paraplegia, but is termed a Cauda Equina Syndrome injury.
