What Is The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)?

Published March 21, 2014 by Matt Fendon Law Group | Firm News

The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federally-mandated law which guarantees that employees who meet certain qualifications can take up to a 12-week medical leave of absence from their job without fear of losing their position or their insurance benefits. Any individual who works for an employer that has at least 50 full-time employees may request this type of medical leave for the birth and care of a newborn child, for the adoption or placement of a foster child, to care for a parent, child or spouse who has come down with a serious medical condition or to recover from a personal health condition that has made it impossible for the individual to perform his or her duties.

Certain protections are also guaranteed under the FMLA for members of the military and their families. If you or a loved one has requested leave under the FMLA and been denied, you have been terminated or demoted as a result of taking leave, or your employer has cancelled your insurance coverage while on leave, the lawyers here at Fendon Law Firm, P.C. can help.
