Is There Compensation for Facial Scarring?
We frequently receive questions about whether scarring is compensable in Arizona workers’ compensation law. The answer is yes if it’s facial scarring and it is considered “disfigurement.” See ARS 23-1044(b)(22).
Under Arizona law, for a facial scar to be considered “disfigurement,” it must cause “observable marring or impairment of natural appearance of his bearer” but it doesn’t have to be serious (See the statute cited above). It’s also important to note that not every facial scar meets this requirement.
Claimants in Phoenix or Tucson can go down to the Industrial Commission or send pictures to get the scar rated by a commission claims division employee.
Another way to get a rating is to schedule an appointment with a board-certified physician who knows how to rate facial scars under the Arizona industrial system.
