Safety Event Puts Spotlight on Falls

Published March 2, 2020 by Matt Fendon Law Group

In May, companies in Arizona and throughout the country are encouraged to participate in the National Safety Stand-Down week. During the event, OSHA will be putting the spotlight on the dangers that employees face while working at heights. An emphasis will also be placed on the negative consequences of falls that take place at work. According to OSHA, 320 construction workers died because of falls from elevation.

Ideally, companies will spend time talking about their own safety protocols and why they are important. Employers can also take time to further explain the importance of safety equipment and how to use it properly. While the National Safety Stand-Down event is aimed at raising awareness about falls, employers can take time to talk about other hazards that they may face. Furthermore, companies from outside of the construction industry are allowed to participate.

In the past, organizations such as the United States military have held Stand-Down events of their own or participated in public events. OSHA has a website that lists public events that will be taking place during the Stand-Down week. The organization can also provide useful information to help employers design and execute their own safety talks. Other safety groups including National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR) are helping with the event.

Those who are injured in a fall or for any other reason while at work could be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. This may allow a worker to obtain a portion of any wages lost after the injury occurs. Employees who are hurt on the job are encouraged to start the process of applying for benefits as soon as possible. An attorney might be able to help employees obtain benefits in a timely manner.
